What is sports rehabilitation?

Sports rehabilitation focuses on treating sports injuries as well as preventing recurrence. Think of knee, ankle, shoulder or back problems, but also recovery after surgery such as a cruciate ligament reconstruction. Treatment is often more intensive than regular physical therapy and focuses on building strength, coordination, speed and sport-specific movements.

Pre-operative physical therapy: going into your surgery stronger

At Sento Medical we guide you not only after surgery, but also beforehand. Good preparation really makes a difference. The fitter and stronger you are before surgery, the better and faster you generally recover afterwards (“better in = better out”).

For example, do you have a torn anterior cruciate ligament or planned shoulder or hip surgery? Then we often start with pre-operative physical therapy. Together we ensure that your muscles become stronger, your range of motion is optimal and you know what to expect.

By training beforehand, you not only work on your fitness and strength, but also build confidence in your own recovery process. We explain what to expect, what you can and cannot do, and how best to prepare your body. In case of a torn cruciate ligament, we guide you fully in the pre- and postoperative process. Also with other orthopedic surgeries we think with you from the beginning, so you can start your rehabilitation with a head start.

Benefits of pre-operative training:

  • Improved muscle strength and stability
  • Less muscle loss after surgery
  • Shorter recovery time
  • More control and self-confidence

Want to know if pre-operative physical therapy is for you? Feel free to contact us, we’d love to think with you.

Common sports injuries where our physios can help you

Knee pain

Knee injuries are frequently seen in sports such as soccer, running, skiing and tennis. Consider meniscus problems, patellofemoral pain syndrome, overuse of the patellar tendon or ligament structures, and anterior cruciate ligament (VKB) injuries. We guide you in reducing pain, restoring strength and mobility, and safely building load capacity.

Ankle sprains and tendonitis

A sprained ankle sometimes seems harmless, but without proper management it can lead to long-term instability. With targeted therapy, we prevent this from becoming chronic. We also treat tendon problems such as Achilles tendonitis, a (partial) tendon tear or tendinopathy, often caused by overuse or sudden trauma.

Shoulder instability and stiff shoulder

With overhead sports such as swimming, tennis or strength training, shoulder problems regularly arise from instability, a feeling of entrapment or stiffness. We help you with targeted exercises, posture training and mobility techniques to help your shoulder feel powerful, stable and flexible again.

Groin injuries and hamstring problems

Groin and hamstring injuries often occur during explosive movements, accelerations or unexpected turns. These complaints require careful and sport-specific building of strength, control and flexibility. Together we provide a recovery program that will gradually bring you back to your old level.

Back pain in athletes

Back pain is common in athletes who twist, bend or exert a lot of force, such as in field hockey, rowing, martial arts or fitness. Symptoms may stem from overuse, decreased stability or a technique we can still work on. We carefully examine the cause and help you with targeted exercise therapy, stretches, posture training and sport-specific rehabilitation. This way we prevent the complaint from returning and you can move again with confidence.

Recovery after (sports) surgery

After operations such as anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, keyhole surgery of the hip or knee or shoulder stabilization, we guide you through intensive rehabilitation. We build up step by step toward sport-specific load, with a course that matches your sport and personal pace of recovery.

Our approach: targeted and tailored to you

Every rehabilitation begins with a comprehensive intake. We listen, analyze and test. Then together we draw up a rehabilitation plan in which we set realistic goals: proper and responsible movement, sport-specific load capacity, return to competitions or performance.

We combine exercise therapy, stability training, strength training, manual techniques and mental guidance as needed.

Location and facilities

You can find our practice in the Jordaan, on Marnixplein, at Sento Spa & Health Club. Here we have a spacious exercise room, strength equipment, mats and everything needed for sports-specific training. The practice is also easily accessible by bicycle, streetcar and car. Our location is wheelchair accessible and there is an elevator.

When to start sports rehabilitation?

The sooner you start, the better. By starting rehabilitation immediately after an injury or surgery, you can prevent symptoms from worsening or becoming chronic. We make sure you don’t return to your sport too soon, but also not too late.
